How to Organize Your Bedroom Closet

Preparation

Begin organizing your bedroom closet by removing everything and then sorting like items with like items, namely, shirts with shirts and pants with pants, etc. You may even sub-sort by winter versus summer clothing.

When that task is complete weed through the piles to eliminate clothing that no longer fits, is worn out, or that you never wear. Decide which you will donate and which you may want to sell in a garage sale or deposit in the round file.

While the clothes are removed it would be a good time to paint the inside of this often dark cavern. If your closet is a walk-in type you probably have existing lighting. Is it sufficient? If your clothes chamber is smaller I recommend painting the walls white which helps to reflect light.

You may also want to install a light if none exists. Even the wall mounted fluorescent battery operated units can be helpful if the idea of installing a new electrical light socket sounds daunting.

Planning

Now that everything is sorted out it will be easier to plan on what should go where. If space is limited you may want to store any clothing that isn’t suitable for the current season.

To plan your new layout I suggest you check some websites for organizational products to help you in your rearrangement. Stacks and Stacks is one good source. You will find shoe organizers, tie racks, rods, hooks, cascading hangers, shelf organizers, etc. just to name a few options. Many of these will work with existing rods already within.

Shoe racks and bags come in a variety of designs and you will find they have more options than Carter has liver pills. Some are made to hang over closet door. Tie racks also come in a variety of designs and you can even find rotating motorized racks. Tie racks will also accommodate belts.

Shoe racks can double as storage for miscellaneous items. I recommend clear plastic so you can see what is stored in each compartment. Accessory bags can be used for storing earrings, bracelets, and other items for easy access.

Consider rolling garment racks that may fit within the closet or outside for additional hanging space. Hat and coat trees or racks can also be placed outside to save space. If you are a handy man you may want to build your own. Click on the following link for some coat tree and coat rack plans: Coat tree and rack plans

For seasonal or seldom worn items consider storing them in space bags which can have the air removed from them using a vacuum and then the bags can be stored out of the way under the bed.

Naturally your decision on which products to purchase will depend partly on your budget. Peruse flea markets and garage sales to save a few bucks.

Arranging

Now that you know what products are available you can get to work with placing your clothes back in their new home.

Here are a few pointers to remember when “redoing” your closet:

  • Hang and store like clothing with like
  • Place frequently used items near the front and at eye level
  • Use racks and shelves as opposed to boxes for easier access and visibility
  • For shoe and accessory organizers use products with clear compartments
  • Don’t forget that valuable real estate called the floor for placing items

I hope you will find that a well organized bedroom closet will save you time especially during your morning prep for work. Having your clothing well placed should achieve that. Perhaps your reward for the time saved should be a few extra minutes in the sack.
