How to Organize Your Home (a.k.a. domicile, digs, or crib)
“Organize my home”, you say. Some people are naturals at it while others find it a real chore. Perhaps the way your home is cluttered you are feeling more like an Oscar than a Felix from the old TV show the Odd Couple. Actually it was an offshoot of a movie by the same name. I know many of my readers are likely too young to remember that show, but basically it was a comedy about two divorced men who lived together in an apartment. Oscar was, well to put it bluntly, your basic slob that left his stuff lying around and generally made a real mess. Felix on the other hand was very tidy and meticulous or what many would call a neat freak. When it came to housekeeping they were exact opposites. According to a study by a marketing firm, the average American burns 55 minutes a day looking for things they know they own but cannot find. Point…saving time is just one of the advantages of having your ducks in a row. In some cases having your things in order can mean saving money as well. For instance, if you lose or misplace your bills due to poor “housekeeping” then you may have to pay late fees. Another example I’m sure some of you can identify with is when you buy a duplicate item because you can’t find the one you have. Sometimes organizing will require decluttering your humble abode if you have an accumulation of “junk”. Organizing and decluttering often go hand in hand. A decluttering job can often seem overwhelming. Folks often find it difficult to let go of items due to the memories that are attached to them. Identifying the reason for keeping something can help in letting it go. One of the benefits of decluttering your world is not just the space it saves, but it can give rise to very liberating feelings. One can have a sense of not only clearing their domicile, but also of clearing their mind. While sorting through clutter you will want to place items in categories like donate, sell, keep, recycle, and items destined for the dipsy dumpster. I’ll be providing advice on the above topics under this major heading of organizing a home. I’ll breakdown the articles into separate rooms or areas and provide tips for arranging each whether it is bedroom, kitchen, closet, family room, etc. I’ll provide storage solutions and offer space saving tips for a more efficient setting. This website is currently under construction but, I’ll be adding other organizing topics for the office, computer, files, ways to preserve and display your photos, and other topics including tips and advice on relocation. So, please return frequently to view new material that has been added.
