Valuables to Transport Personally When Relocating

Certain valuables, items of a personal and sentimental nature, and important documents are items it is recommended that you transport yourself. Some moving companies place these on their non-allowable list because they do not want to be responsible for them.

These are items that can create problems if your shipment is delayed. Also, from an insurance coverage standpoint some of these items are uninsurable or can be considered irreplaceable.

Valuables and Other Personal Items

Examples include:

  • Prescription medications
  • Laptop computers
  • Cell phones
  • Pagers
  • Checkbooks
  • Cash
  • Computer discs
  • Family records(medical, dental, school)
  • Financial documents(stocks, bonds, certificates of deposit, IRA’s)
  • Deeds
  • Car titles
  • Insurance policies(life, auto, home, etc.)
  • Documents pertaining to move and new home
  • Address books
  • Keys(cars, furniture, safe, home)
  • Personal video tapes
  • Jewelry
  • Collectibles(rare coins, art, honors, medals, certificates of achievement, trophies)
  • Antiques
  • Family heirlooms
  • Family photographs
  • Wedding albums
  • Airline tickets
  • Professional files
  • Diplomas

Perishables

Other items you will want to consider transporting yourself as well include: pets, plants, produce, and frozen and refrigerated foods. Moving companies will not tend to living things that may die or perishables that may spoil in transit. If the shipment distance is minimal arrangements might be made for transport of these if they are properly packed and require no servicing in transit.

I recommend transporting your pets personally for either long or short trips. Also in advance of the move plan to use up as many perishable items as possible so you have less to deal with. Consider throwing a neighborhood going away cookout to use up refrigerated foods and other perishables. Plus this is a good opportunity to say farewell to your friends.
